Advivo’s Managing Partner, Leon Stephan, shares his personal thoughts on how to make sure that 2024 gets off to a great start.
As we enter the first days of 2024, now is an excellent opportunity to reflect on your growth for the year and set intentions for the year to come.
Whilst we work on the financial year ending 30 June in the accounting and financial world, the end of the calendar year marks the halfway mark and generally allows us some time off. I always find the downtime at this time of year useful to reflect on the 6 months to date and ask myself a few questions:
• What went well in the last 6 months?
• What should I be doing more of?
• What went not so well?
• What should I change?
• Am I on track to achieve my financial goals (budget) and other non-financial goals?
As business owners, we are all usually time-poor, but I personally find that this time of year affords me the chance to reflect on the issues and do a little bit of analysis. I find that the break allows me to recharge the battery and energises me to kick the New Year off with vigour and some updated or new strategies to help me and the Advivo team achieve our goals.
If you are struggling to create some specific goals and a financial budget that you can monitor on a monthly basis – that is where Advivo comes in! As the saying goes – failing to plan is planning to fail. It’s an oldie, but a goodie. Our one page business plan, is a great way to help you do this so that you can prioritise action items that will make the most difference.
Another great tool is to approach goal setting with an open mind: what do you really want to do in your business in the coming year? Too often when considering this question, the left side of our brain takes over and we start second guessing ‘I don’t have enough money for that’, ‘I don’t have enough time or resources for that’. Stop! Instead think: if I had a magic wand and money was not an issue, what would I want to do or achieve? Establish the goal unfettered by limitations and then plan around those limitations. Don’t forget all good plans need that financial budget and monthly reviewing to see if you are on track.
Whatever you want for this new year, or even the next few months, setting thought-out intentions can give you a head start for 2024, help you set a path to get to where you want to be and stay on it when plans go awry.
