Small Business, Big Impact
May is Small Business Month and a good moment to reflect on what small business owners across Australia achieve every day.
We work with small business owners constantly and we know the reality: the long hours, the cash flow pressures, the juggling act of wearing every hat. That’s why this month matters. It’s a chance to acknowledge how much small businesses contribute and to ask whether yours is set up to thrive, not just survive.
As of June 2025, 97.3% of all Australian businesses are small businesses defined by the ABS as those with fewer than 20 employees. There are now over 2.7 million actively trading businesses across the country.
The economic contribution is significant. Small businesses added over $590 billion of value in 2023–24, representing approximately one-third of Australia’s total GDP. They also employed over 5 million people.
Behind every number is a business owner who took a risk, built something, and kept people employed.
Growth doesn’t have to be overwhelming
One of the biggest myths we encounter is that growth is too hard or too expensive. However, with the right strategy, there are several ways to achieve growth, many of which don’t require significant upfront capital. Options like organic growth, better pricing, exploring new markets, and implementing a smarter financial structure can all be effective. Success depends on careful planning and a strong team, which can motivate and guide you through the process.
Many business owners become so involved in daily operations that stepping away can jeopardise their business. Small Business Month is an excellent opportunity to reflect on important questions: Is my business structured to operate independently of me? Do I have the right systems and reporting processes in place? Am I making decisions based on accurate financial data?
If you’re not sure, that’s where we can help.
